It has been a bit of a strange opening six weeks of the Premier League season.
Last year’s goal machines have struggled to find the net, while the several of the summer’s Premier League newbies have hit the ground running and snatched all the headlines.
But none more so that Manchester United’s Anthony Martial. The 19-year-old went from being a relatively unknown quantity at Monaco to the world’s most expensive teenager on the deadline day as Louis van Gaal sanctioned United’s sensational £36million move for him, with the fee potentially rising to £58million over the next few years.
Many people had never heard of him before he rocked up at Old Trafford earlier this month, while fans of the Football Manager game will know him as one of the future’s brightest prospects. However, no one expected him to have the start he’s had in English football.
The France international came off the bench to score on his debut against Liverpool a couple of weeks ago, and then followed it up with an impressive brace in a 3-2 victory away at Southampton. That takes his Premier League tally to three goals in two appearances, while his goal against Ipswich in the Capital One Cup means he’s registered exactly a goal a game in all competitions. Four in four – not bad.
But what make it more impressive is the fact he’s been more clinical in front of goal than Diego Costa, Sergio Aguero, Harry Kane and Alexis Sanchez put together so far this term.
While the aforementioned strikers have managed just two goals from 83 shots between them (averaging a goal every 931 minutes), Martial has netted three goals from four shots (a goal every 39 minutes). That’s a strike rate of 75% for the youngster, compared to 2.4% for last season’s most prolific Premier League strikers.
What was that about his over-inflated transfer fee?
