Roberts received a lot of criticism for his challenge, which saw him sent off by Michael Oliver after a VAR review and subsequently landed with an extended six-match ban. Millwall fans also held a minute's applause for the goalkeeper during their game with Bristol City on Tuesday.

Roberts released a statement after being handed his prolonged ban, saying that he is "devastated by what happened" and that "misleading articles and comments have resulted in an unthinkable amount of abusive messages and threats towards my family and I".

The impact of the ban itself is unlikely to be felt too badly at Millwall, for whom Lukas Jensen is number one goalkeeper in the Championship. They play Leeds away on Wednesday, sitting seven points off the play-off places with 10 matches to play.
