Despite that, Plettenberg adds that Bayern are trying to extend the contract of 38-year-old Neuer, after 13 years with the Bundesliga giants. Moreover, they see 28-year-old Alexander Nubel – who is on loan at Stuttgart – as his long-term successor, which may cause Verbruggen some concern.

Verbruggen swapped Anderlecht for Brighton for £16.3 million ($21.3m) in the summer of 2023 on a five-year deal. The 22-year-old has since gone on to become a regular for the Netherlands' national team but his form has been somewhat up and down for Brighton – with Jason Steele sometimes preferred between the sticks.
