De Ligt made the move to Manchester United this summer from Bayern Munich for a reported fee of £38.5 million ($50.5m), with a further £5m ($6.5m) in add-ons. The Dutch defender has already made his debut for Erik ten Hag's side during their Premier League opening-day win against Fulham, coming off the bench in the 1-0 triumph. However, The Athletic has now made a number of revelations regarding the centre-back's departure from Bayern.

The report states that new Bayern Munich boss Vincent Kompany wanted De Ligt to stay at the Allianz Arena this summer. The Dutchman had reportedly talked to the Belgian coach about his place in the Bavarians' squad and he was reassured by Kompany that he was his 'No.1 defender' this season. Indeed, the former Burnley manager wanted De Ligt to stay put, but Bayern's top brass were reportedly not keen on keeping hold of the 25-year-old, and decided to proceed with the sale.

The Athletic has also reported that De Ligt's camp felt that Bayern Munich were 'playing games' with them during talks between the Bavarians and De Ligt's entourage over the future of the centre-back. The Bavarian club's hierarchy were apparently intent on selling the Dutchman, and were not serious when holding talks with the centre-back about a potential stay.
WHAT NEXT FOR DE LIGT?
The Dutch defender started on the bench against Fulham last weekend, with him only having trained once or twice since landing in Manchester. However, when the Red Devils take on Brighton on Saturday, August 24, it is possible that he will get the nod and partner Lisandro Martinez at the heart of defence.
