Speaking to Football Insider, Noel Whelan has given a potential reason as to why Jack Clarke hasn’t swapped Leeds United for Tottenham yet.
The young winger has been linked with the London club this summer, but a deal hasn’t been struck between the two sides as of yet.
What’s been said then?
The 43-year-old says that Leeds have valued their hot prospect too highly, and their £20m valuation has put off any potential suitors.
“Leeds have overpriced the young man from what I hear,” he told Football Insider. “They want £20million for him, and he’s not worth that. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
“£12million is a lot of money, but £20million is overpricing a player. You have to be sensible with a player’s valuation. He still has a long way to go.
“Don’t get me wrong, I’d love him to stay at Leeds and progress as a player, but we will see if that happens.”
For a reason
Whelan is spot on when he says that Leeds are overpricing Clarke, but they are likely doing that for a reason.
Aged just 18, the winger has the potential to be worth way more than £20m one day, and by slapping that price tag on his head, the Whites are making it clear that they don’t want to sell him unless they’re getting a reasonable price for him.
The youngster certainly isn’t at the level of a player worth that amount at the moment, but there’s no reason why he can’t get there one day.
By valuing him so highly the Whites can’t lose – they will either get a great fee for one of their hottest young players or they get to keep hold of arguably one of the most talented teenagers in the country for another season.
