The Toffees hosted a test game at their newly opened 52,000-seater stadium on Monday with 10,000 fans in attendance as their U18 side faced Wigan's youth side. The visitors broke the deadlock in the 12th minute of the match with 18-year-old midfielder Rimmer scoring the first-ever goal at the venue. Rimmer, who is a Liverpool fan, celebrated the goal by mocking the hosts with a Reds' gesture where he used his fingers to show six European titles won by Everton's arch-rivals.

The first-ever game at their new home turned out to be a disaster for the Merseyside club as they eventually went down 2-1. The Toffees' senior team will start using the venue as their home ground from the 2025-26 campaign. Last week, the club played in the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park one last time and James Tarkowski made the outing a memorable one as his last-gasp goal helped them to hold the Premier League leaders to a 2-2 draw.

Before joining Wigan Athletic's youth ranks, Monday's goalscorer Rimmer spent a considerable amount of time at Everton during his formative years.
