Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has revealed that there has been “no progress” on his contract situation, reports The Mirror.
What’s the latest?
The 26-year-old is one of a handful of players that will become free agents at the Emirates when the season comes to a close.
Doubts over the midfielder’s future at Arsenal have always circulated, mainly due to the player’s constant injury woes.
Wilshere has been plagued with such problems throughout his career, which was a big reason behind the club’s decision to send the England international to Bournemouth on loan last season.
Now back at the Gunners, the midfielder has impressed in recent games, earning a starting spot in the club’s last six outings.
According to The Mirror, when asked about his contract situation, Wilshere said:
“No progress there. I want to be going to Russia but now is not the time to be thinking about that. We’ve got to take each game as it comes, keep playing in this time, keep improving and we’ll see what comes in March for the next international games.”
Is he good enough?
Frustration has followed Wilshere around in his career because of the injury problems that have kept him on the sidelines for significant spells.
The midfielder’s talent and ability has never come into question, but injury-prone players are not much use to clubs battling for honours at elite level.
Wilshere is having a positive spell in terms of fitness and that is reflecting on the pitch.
The Englishman has impressed consistently and on Wednesday night he scored his first Premier League goal of the season in a dramatic 2-2 draw with Chelsea at the Emirates.
If Wilshere is keen to stay, then it is worth Arsenal offering him a fresh deal.
The current hesitation on the Gunners’ part is unclear, but having Wilshere in the ranks would certainly boost the team rather than hinder their progress.
