All football clubs have fans that are an out and out embarrassment. Trust me, I support Spurs and I don’t care to be stuck in thirty six and a half thousand seater stadium with a good number of them, let alone a lift.
This site is always revealing as being one of those dreadful generic ones it doesn’t really have a regularly identifiable community such as you might get on a ‘one club’ message board or forum.
But instead you benefit from getting a flavour of all the clubs and just like any tribe, the nature of their ‘group personality’.
These are observations drawn with a broad brush, but I believe them to be true…
Arsenal fans can be almost forensic in their appreciation of their tribe. They analyze their football within the neatly defined parameters given to them by Prof Wenger. Just as a scientist is guided by the Laws Of Nature. They want to be fair, but can be over protective.
Newcastle fans are exactly what it says on the tin. They treat their season ticket as if it were a utility bill. Booze, hugs, hearts the size of biscuit tins and the occasional cry of Baps Oot! The Irish think they invented, ‘The Craic’. I believe they only imported it from Tyne & Wear.
Manchester United are quite funny bunch. As purist in their appreciation as The Gunners, but with a corporate feel. They are of course able to discreetly bask in several decades of excellence. Whatever achievements others might threaten them with, the Red Devils have been there and won the trophy already.
The Chelsea tribe suffered dog’s abuse when their Oligarch poured his millions into them. Cries of ‘where were you when you were sh*t’ were often hurled at them if they dared to enjoy their intimidating rejuvenation under The Special One. The answer to that nasty accusation of course is that they were largely the same fans who used to watch them before they became unplayable.
And so to City.
I have to state for the benefit of the tape (Escapini has not been mirandized and is unaware of his rights) that – aside for an irrational dislike of most things West Ham shaped which I freely and openly declare – I have no axe to grind with any club.
But Manchester City fans have of late demonstrated such thin skins that you barely mention their Club in passing and you find yourself being policed as to what you are ‘actually trying to say’ or being met with a barrage of pretty heated abuse before being cautioned on your future comments.
Chelsea’s model of buying in talent as if you were playing a computer game and had a cheat code so your funds were unlimited does two things. It gets you excited at the prospect of all the glory it might bring, as well as a tad apprehensive that your band of mercenaries will actually ‘gel’ and, ‘do th called e business’ after all.
me and hopefully just a vocal minority of City fans have not yet completely adjusted to their new found fortunes. And seem to have invested emotionally so as to match penny for penny their wealthy backers.
Neil Ashton writes for the News Of The World. Yesterday he broke the Tevez story. The bile and hate leveled at the guy has been surreal. Ignorant, unfounded and hurtful. Oh hang on.
Did you see what I did there? I inadvertently listed the very same charges that were hurled at him.
Do people really think that journalists make up everything? Do they really think that journalists make up such huge stories as this? Do people really believe that a journalist would concoct a pack of lies as some childish attack on a football club that he didn’t like?
The answer is yes there are some people who believe all of the above and those people are called idiots.
