Everybody loves a maverick and this list is a fine selection of footballers who were showmen, renegades and entertainers all at once. They were men playing by their own rules and not giving a damn about the status quo, defiance was their middle name, artistry was in their blood, the fire of their passion burned brightest of all, etc etc etc…
To keep this simple, I’m taking the dictionary definition of the word maverick and working from there. It reads: A lone dissenter, as an intellectual, an artist, or a politician, who takes an independent stand apart from his or her associates. Mavericks are the non-conformists, the free thinkers and the individualists.
There are many legendary names that haven’t made this list. I hovered over Paul Gascoigne, still a maverick to this day, Lee Trundle was one of the first names to pop into my head, Shaka Hislop was the premiership’s only qualified astronaut.
